Understanding Plating

IDEAL FOR: Fashion and jewellery technologists and buyers; specifically those responsible for agreeing or specifying supplier plating techniques and standards.

This course is specifically designed to support buyers, technologists and those responsible for quality assurance for fine and fashion / costume jewellery and accessories that has metal plating. Delegates will gain a thorough understanding of the basic principles of the plating process as well as recognised best practices. The course will also cover factors that can impact quality and durability. Current and pending legislation will also be covered. The course will highlight important and appropriate factors to include within retail plating specifications, reflecting the most commonly cited or occurring quality or consumer satisfaction issues. A practical demonstration is also included which will demonstrate how a final product can be tested to determine plating quality and durability.

This course is a combination of presentation combined with handling practical examples and is intended for those involved in either buying, authenticating or valuing watches whether as a business or for private interest. This one day course will provide a detailed insight into fake watches and how to identify them including the latest innovations in fake watch production, watches formed from a combination of parts – known as ‘Franken-watches’, as well as examining watches that started out as authentic and have subsequently been modified.  Delegates will understand the significance of after-market modifications and their impact on value. Working with the 10x loupe, we will look at and compare natural diamonds and discuss how these products should be described and sold. Understanding Consumer Product Safety Compliance

IDEAL FOR: Fashion and jewellery technologists and buyers, who require clarity on current and pending EU compliance legislation. 

This one-day course offers basic level training for jewellery technologists and costume jewellery and fashion accessories buyers who need a broad knowledge of new and current EU and USA product legislation. It provides an invaluable overview of relevant legislation relating to precious and non-precious metals and accessories and focusses specifically on Nickel, Lead and Cadmium. Explanation is given as to why each element is harmful and the practicalities of current regulations regarding restricted substances.  Delegates will leave better informed as to what to include in a specification and the tests required to ensure product is compliant with current Consumer Product Safety regulations.  The course provides 7 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity.

Understanding Jewellery Valuations

IDEAL FOR: Retail professionals or pawnbroking junior sales staff involved in the buying or selling of jewellery.

This course is ideal for anyone with an interest in the value of jewellery. This includes retailers, pawnbrokers, auctioneers and those involved in consumer complaints or insurance replacement. It is expected that delegates have some experience of jewellery and gemstones. The intensive one day course will give delegates confidence and knowledge, providing an understanding of the methodology and many different approaches required to produce a fair jewellery valuation, appropriate to its intended use. Basic diamond, coloured gemstone and metal pricing will be discussed and delegates will examine items of jewellery for assessment.
