Understanding Jewellery

IDEAL FOR: Retail sales or pawnbroking professionals, customer services staff and people who would benefit from an overall understanding of how jewellery is made.

Understanding the many different methods of jewellery manufacture is important knowledge for anyone in the supply chain. This course explains the various ways in which jewellery is made and how this affects the quality, durability and appearance.

The impact on lead time and cost will also be covered.  Delegates will learn about typical alloys used in jewellery, techniques such as engraving and diamond milling and some fundamental rules about working with gemstones. Approaches to costing and pricing in order to reach a commercial retail price will also be covered.

Understanding Plating

IDEAL FOR: Fashion and jewellery technologists and buyers; specifically those responsible for agreeing or specifying supplier plating techniques and standards.

This course is specifically designed to support buyers, technologists and those responsible for quality assurance for fine and fashion / costume jewellery and accessories that has metal plating. Delegates will gain a thorough understanding of the basic principles of the plating process as well as recognised best practices. The course will also cover factors that can impact quality and durability. Current and pending legislation will also be covered. The course will highlight important and appropriate factors to include within retail plating specifications, reflecting the most commonly cited or occurring quality or consumer satisfaction issues. A practical demonstration is also included which will demonstrate how a final product can be tested to determine plating quality and durability.

EXPOSED: Fakes, Franken & Custom Watches

IDEAL FOR: Senior or experienced retail and pawnbroking professionals involved in the buying, selling or authenticating of luxury watches and timepieces.

OBJECTIVE

This one-day course is a combination of factual presentation and handling practical examples.  It is intended for those involved in either buying, authenticating or valuing watches whether as a business or for private interest. The course provides a detailed insight into fake watches and how to identify them including the latest innovations in fake watch production. It also covers watches formed from a combination of parts – known as ‘Franken-watches’, as well as examining watches that started out as authentic and have subsequently been modified.  Delegates will understand the significance of after-market modifications and their impact on value. It provides 6 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity.

EXPOSED: The Inside Story - Gemstone Treatments Revealed

IDEAL FOR: Senior retail professionals or experienced pawnbrokers involved in buying or selling loose coloured gemstones or set jewellery.

This is a hands-on course designed for those who already have knowledge of Coloured Gemstones and will reveal the inside story about gemstone treatments. Under the expert tuition of Gwyn Green, delegates will study a range of sample stones and learn some important lessons about detecting treatments and recognising the tell-tale signs that a stone is not entirely natural and untreated. Provides 6 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Activity.

EXPOSED: Diamond Simulants, Synthetics and Treatments

IDEAL FOR: Senior retail professionals or experienced pawnbrokers involved in buying or selling loose diamonds or set jewellery.

This is a hands-on course designed for those who have a basic understanding of diamonds. This one-day course gives delegates a chance to see and handle diamond simulants, synthetics and treated diamonds, giving them confidence in identifying them in the retail environment. Working with the 10x loupe, we will look at and compare natural diamonds and discuss how these products should be described and sold. Testing procedures and certification nomenclature will be explained.  This course is designed with an emphasis on practical knowledge and how to apply it.  The course provides 6 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity.

Understanding Diamonds

IDEAL FOR: Retail professionals or pawnbroking junior sales staff involved in buying or selling loose diamonds or set jewellery.

This hands-on diamond training course is intended for retail staff who already have some experience of selling jewellery and precious stones. The one-day course will provide an in-depth understanding of diamonds, improving their confidence when selling. It gives each delegate a chance to study and observe loose diamonds using a 10x  loupe as in retail conditions. Delegates will gain a greater understanding of the 4 C’s and also diamond treatments, simulants and synthetics. The course provides 6 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity.

Understanding Hallmarking

IDEAL FOR: Retail sales professionals and pawnbrokers who need to understand their requirements under hallmarking legislation. Ideal as induction for new starters to the trade.

This course is ideal for those working in the jewellery or precious metal trades, collectors, and members of the public, who would like to learn more about Hallmarking, including the history of Hallmarking in the UK and current legislation. This course provides a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes and visit the Hallmarking Floor at Assay Office Birmingham, which is not usually open to the public.  You will see how Hallmarks are applied to precious metal items and jewellery by traditional and modern methods. The course provides three hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity.

Understanding Coloured Gemstones

IDEAL FOR: Retail professionals or pawnbroking junior sales staff involved in buying or selling loose coloured gemstones or set jewellery.

This one-day interactive coloured gemstone training course takes an in-depth look at some of the most important coloured stones used in jewellery, including sapphires, rubies, emeralds and tanzanite. Delegates will gain a good commercial understanding of these stones and the key selling points for each one. A practical session looking at gemstones will give participants greater confidence in identifying coloured stones and their imitations. This course is an excellent refresher for those with some experience, or a good starting point for delegates who are new to assessing or selling coloured gemstones.
