Understanding Plating

Objective

IDEAL FOR: Fashion and jewellery technologists and buyers; specifically those responsible for agreeing or specifying supplier plating techniques and standards.

This course is specifically designed to support buyers, technologists and those responsible for quality assurance for fine and fashion / costume jewellery and accessories that has metal plating. Delegates will gain a thorough understanding of the basic principles of the plating process as well as recognised best practices. The course will also cover factors that can impact quality and durability. Current and pending legislation will also be covered. The course will highlight important and appropriate factors to include within retail plating specifications, reflecting the most commonly cited or occurring quality or consumer satisfaction issues. A practical demonstration is also included which will demonstrate how a final product can be tested to determine plating quality and durability.

  • What Causes Substandard Plating Results?
  • Pre-treatment requirements –  why are they essential for good plating results.
  • Silver, Gold, Platinum, Rhodium, Ruthenium and base metal plating respectively  – ‘correct plating cycle’ and technical reasoning  behind each of the steps.
  • Building the specification as we go along for Silver, Gold, Platinum, rhodium and base metals.
  • Causes of variable thicknesses and plating defects.
  • What needs to be done to achieve a uniform thickness results and defect free plating?
  • Consistency and Uniformity of colour – colour specifications.
  • Susceptibility to tarnishing – factors include porosity, wear resistance, packaging.
  • Terminology for different plating's and coatings – PVC, CVD, e-coating.
  • Restricted Substances to be aware of.
  • Determining plating thickness – practical application.
  • Quality control and inspection.
  • Regulatory aspects.
