NAJ JET Students Industry Day
This workshop is intended to educate and inspire NAJ Students as they develop a career in the Jewellery Industry. It offers relevant hands on experience which would not necessarily be available in the retail environment.
The workshop will offer a sound understanding of hallmarking and a glimpse into and overview of the jewellery industry through the eyes of the long established Assay Office Birmingham. It provides a unique opportunity to handle loose gemstones and standard gem equipment which delegates may have learned about but never had the opportunity to use in real life. Students also benefit from the chance to network with other NAJ students.
The workshop will include a brief presentation on the history, development and diversification of Assay Office Birmingham followed by a summary of current statistics and trends within the Jewellery industry. This will include precious metal prices, gemstone issues and retail trends. The relevance of the services offered by the other four divisions of AnchorCert Group, including AnchorCert Analytical, AnchorCert Gem Lab, SafeGuard Jewellery Valuations and AnchorCert Academy and the reasons for developing them will be outlined.
Following this introduction, there will be a comprehensive explanation of hallmarking legislation and current practice, to include the international picture. After an early lunch the day will become totally interactive giving delegates the opportunity to enjoy experiences which may not usually be available to them. The group will split into two smaller cohorts of eight, which will alternate to undertake two afternoon interactive sessions, one focused on hallmarking and one on diamonds and gemstones.
The hallmarking session will offer a comprehensive tour of the punch making, assaying and hallmarking process. All current hallmarking methods will be explored from traditional hand struck to cutting edge laser etched marks. Delegates will also be able to try their hand with a hammer and punch to see how they measure up to Assay Office experts! The gemstone session will give delegates the experience of handling and assessing loose stones. Diamonds, coloured gemstones and semi-precious stones will be available for examination with a 10 x loupe or under a microscope with continual guidance from an expert tutor who works in the industry on a daily basis and can share their own personal anecdotes to enrich the experience.
