The Birmingham Assay Office is 240 years old today...and still looking good! On 31st August 1773, The Birmingham Assay Office opened its doors for the very first time. By this time, it had become clear to the silversmiths of Birmingham, especially Matthew Boulton, that their trade would never truly prosper without an Assay Office of their own. The Birmingham Assay Office was delighted to accept an invitation from C.W. Sellors to see their plans for a new Jewellery Design Centre of Excellence to be built in Carsington, Derbyshire.
